Fuel handling machine

Fuel handling machine is one of the most important elements of NPP operation.

Fuel handling machine represents a special-purpose robot handler. It consists of bridge with traversing trolley installed with working beam and other mechanisms. The device is designed for rehandling of fuel assemblies in reactor core of nuclear power plant.

The machine control is performed remotely using control panel. Hardware-and-software package produced jointly with leading European companies includes advanced electrical cabinets with two-level system, duplicated control panels.

Owing to the unique design and engineering solutions, fuel handling machine provides maximum safety and speed of operation with fuel assemblies.

Operations to be performed by fuel handling machine are as follows:

  • unloading of spent fuel assemblies from reactor, their transportation, and installation into pool storage rack;
  • unloading of new fuel assemblies from hermetic casings in pool storage racks;
  • transportation of new fuel assemblies from pool and their installation into reactor;
  • shuffling of fuel assemblies inside reactor;
  • unloading of fuel assemblies from reactor, their transportation, and installation into casings of fuel cladding leak detection;
  • installation – removal of plugs in casings of fuel cladding leak detection and hermetic casings;
  • shuffling of checked fuel assemblies from casings of fuel cladding leak detection into the reactor or pool depending on the results of control;
  • stripping of mounting sockets for fuel assemblies using special device;
  • inspection of reactor area, mounting sockets for fuel assemblies in basket bottom, and surveillance (by means of TV camera) over coupling-decoupling of working beam with elements being transported.
